Assignment Four: Tutor Feedback

Overall feedback

Assignment 4

You have stated that the location of your exhibition is no longer at the Art Centre – will this eventually happen? You need to explain the change and how you think this has affected your project or not.  What have your learnt from this experience? Document this in your reflections and the rework of your Assignment.

How has your work changed from your initial submission for assessment of BoW and during this final module for SYP? Explain this in your self-reflection for this assignment but also to a greater extent in Assignment 5.  Remember to highlight the change in narrative, techniques and link this to your project and why it was important.

As an exercise produce a table of two columns on one side list all the key words that would describe your BoW project and in the second those that would address your SYP project now.  They may be the same, you may have added to this original list or they may be completely different.  This will be a useful exercise for when you come to complete Assignment 5 and your self-reflection on SYP.

You have included reference to books that you have reviewed within your assignment but haven’t really told me why. How do they relate to your project? – or don’t they? If not why not.  Explain what you have learnt from them and what you have utilised, if anything in your project and your final book.  This needs to relate to your work, not theirs.

 Collaboration

You speak about the collaboration work with Graydon – but what was your objective for this?  It reads well but it would be worth your while looking at other examples as they introduce the subject without referring to the artist, you should revisit this area as the images are the most important aspect of this project.  He could refer to his experiences of the location and community without giving an opinion on your project.

Exhibition Images

You have selected a very traditional way of displaying your images, but you need to detail/explain how you came to this.  Did you look at other styles of layout? What else did you consider?  You have built a great maquette and this could easily be used to show other possible layouts.  Explain why they wouldn’t work for your project.  Could there be other ways of communicating your work.

The frames you have selected are also very traditional – why? What else did you consider and why were they discounted? Show that you have considered alternatives and why it doesn’t work for your project.

Artist Statement

As discussed, there are a number of fragmented sentences that need to be addressed but otherwise the statement reads well.  In the last paragraph you discuss platinum and palladium as a technique but this needs to be linked back to your project.  Why have you selected this as opposed to using digital inkjet prints or cyanotype for example? Detail this so the readers aren’t left wondering.

Bio

This is fine for the most part but remember this is often seen in the same location as your artist statement and should be a cut and paste of the same information.  Try to remove the repartition.  Talk about why you are doing this project.

Feedback based on Learning Outcomes

LO1     Your project has changed considerably since BoW and your ideas have developed but you need to ensure that your journey and ideas are recorded and how you have developed, don’t leave the reader wondering where ideas have come from.

You have developed your skills working with others both during your printing for the exhibition and the collaborative pieces you have included in the book.  Your blog is detailing this well.  It is important that these don’t detract from your work, they are there to support so as discussed, the placement of the written text is important both within the book and when you exhibit.

Your challenges when working with third parties to finally produce a finished book has been well documented and a step learning curve that will hold well for future projects.  Continue to reflect on this process within your blog through to conclusion.

LO2     You are documenting your journey well with the blog both for the exhibition and the book production.  Remember to link back and reflect on your processes and decisions so that the reader can fully understand why you took the approach you did.

LO3     You have demonstrated that you can work well with both your fellow students through collaboration work and third parties such as printers.  Your line of communication is clear in what you want to achieve but ensure that the final result is not lost.  This is your project and work and that needs to be at the fore.

I understand the frustration of entering competitions and you have clearly learnt the lesson of targeting your work to the right audience.

LO4     Entering work into competitions is not the only way to disseminate your work.  Remember to look at other forms of social media, consider Instagram and Facebook, but remember to not mix personal with your profession work. Conder a separate site.

The project website works well but make sure you keep this up to date and promote with any new material.

LO5     Consider giving talks about your project.  You say that you are a member of a camera club – would they be interested in hearing about your project and linking in the platinum and palladium work?

Remember to discuss how you have used your networks to help promote your project.  Have you considered how you will interact with the viewers of your exhibition? Will there be any record of their comments, thoughts? Do you intend to have an opening event and provide a talk about the project – areas to consider.
