Second Photo Shoot 2nd February 2020
So first Assignment has been submitted and whilst I’m waiting I have continued to review and assess the images from the initial session. As previously stated I’m not particularly happy with the results and ‘mood’ of the images, they seem to come across more as snaps that you would find on flicker. I decided to represses a few of the original images into black and white and the square format:
I think these work better, the move to black and white gives depth to the image and a feeling of isolation. For both this session and the initial I have kept within the location of the beach but I think after reading the chapter on Ngawi I might explore the road leading up to the location and then out to the Lighthouse, trying to capture more of the atmosphere and difficulties the residents face from the elements.
I had also set up a photo shoot with a local couple that I have met whilst wondering around on the 30th December, but prior to that I had decided to re-shoot the beach front and try and be a bit more creative the following are those that I think work:
The following images are from my photo shoot with Rob and Trish Mines, a couple who have been together for 53 years. I was so lucky to send a number of hours listening to details of their lives and how they came to live in Ngawi and just fell in love with the place.
Rob’s special place is his man-cave full to the rafters with tools and ‘stuff that will come in useful’. He is known as Mr Fix-it – ‘if man made it then he can fix it’ and in Ngawi where you need to travel for over an hour to get anything then you soon learn how to fix things. I found him mending a caravan that they had just purchased as the plan is to do a bit of traveling (Rob doesn’t like to fly, loves the outside and the sea air). Trish was in the kitchen and loves to collect old English cups and saucers. As a thank you I have sent the images to them and if they are used in the final series I would like to present them with a print.
I would like to expand my images of residents of Ngawi and so plan to draft and post letters requesting volunteers who may be interested in taking part in my project. I would also like to receive feedback from my tutor to ensure I’m on the right track and once I have a reasonable set post for peer review but I don’t think I’m ready for that yet.
