Draft Book: Male bi-folds Version 1
This version came about following the portfolio review by James Gilberd who pointed me in the direction of the work of Fiona Clark (here). One of her projects was featured in ‘Views/Exposures 10 Contemporary New Zealand Photographers’ (1982) published by Minolta. Clark’s images and text are spread over ten pages the majority on a double bi-fold. For me it worked well and I thought that I could utilize a similar idea for my narrative, with a male image on the bi-fold pages and the female images encased on the inside.
Setting up InDesign with a series of ‘master’ pages was becoming easier the more I used it. Figuring out the layout and how to ensure the male image joins seamlessly required a number of ‘Google’ searches and watching videos. The pdf file probably doesn’t show the full effect as you see two half images with the text on the adjoining pages:

Bi-fold pages with part of male image

Centerfold containing the female portraits

Bi-fold pages with part of male image

I think this version really needs to be printed and either reimaged or videoed to show the full effect. The centre pages contain a lot of negative space and once again I have kept to the same images. A rethink on size and image selection may be required, but I don’t want it to be crowded, but also understanding that this would probably be the most expensive book to produce.
Draft Book: Male bi-folds Version 2
I had a number of concerns around this design, apart from the obvious one of printing and reviewers understanding the design from the pdf files. The first was based around the reuse of the original images and layout. I thought that it may be a little cluttered when you opened the bi-fold pages. I did consider spreading them over the four internal pages but thought that would be too much so decided to reduce the image count to just two images from each of the eight women. I need to produce an additional image for Pam, so left a placeholder for when I can return.

Version 2:

As with the other draft book versions I have cleaned up the front cover to remove any reference to my course. I will also need to add additional pages for the collaboration written piece by Jack and consider where I want to use the illustration.
The printing will be complex to ensure that the bi-fold images match down the centre. There will also be a paper selection complex as too thick a paper will cause the folded edge to be very bulky compare with the binding. Research into possible printers will need to be completed and reported on.
I still think this will need to be printed and videoed for reviewers to understand the concept but I will wait for the comments as other areas need to be addressed.

Draft Book: Black and White Only Version 3
I released all five designs to several forums that I attend on a regular basis; the Level 3 Support Group, the Rest of the World Group and the L2/L3 Support Group. The full set of comments can be found here.
I have addressed the text justification to stop the text hyphenating across a line and I have reviewed different fonts, size and colour. The review and comments can be found here.
This version and the male overlay version were the most difficult to visualise in the pdf version and so I will be printing and videoing to enable the final effect to be fully realised. In the feedback received in the Rest of World Group I was able to explain my idea in person but most agreed that to be able to physically see it would have helped.
