SYP Collaboration Work: Flavia

Initial collaboration work can be found here. Designs used in initial book:

During my BoW and for my final submission I included an illustration that had been kindly produced by a fellow student who attends the Rest of the World forum.  I added the piece to the back of the book which at the time I think worked really well.

Following further discussions Flavia has produced a number of new illustrations which originally, I thought would be added to the new book, however as the book design has progressed, I’m thinking of alternative ideas.

Illustrations:

My alternative idea has been to ask a friend who has a 3D printer to use the illustration and produce a lithophane that would be fixed into the cover of the bespoke book that contains the platinum and palladium prints.

The following image shows the initial 3D scan being produced from one of the illustrations:

The final version – a little rough but it was only to see the concept:

Final scan

Due to the depth of the scan and the need to hold the piece up to the light to see the full effect I’ve changed my mind on adding to the front cover of the bespoke book but looking at investigation the possibility of designing a box for the book to fit into.  This scan could then be embedded into the box lid, lifted and raised to the light.

During the process of creating the prints for the exhibition I discovered that I would not be able to obtain the paper I wanted to use for the book in the correct size, so I decided that the extra prints that weren’t selected to be featured in the exhibition would be matted and boxed with the lithophane in the lid.

These are the images to be matted and boxed:

The following video shows the production of the lithophane:

Matting and the exhibition can be seen here.

Presentation Box

At the completion of printing and editing for the exhibition I had five additional prints that were matted and would be presented for sale at the exhibition either individually or as a boxed set.  The box lid would contain the lithophane which would link the main industry of Ngawi to the printed work.

The following images show the production of the box and with it in position at the exhibition:
