On the 14th November 2021 I reported in my Thoughts and Reflection the interest in entering the Photo Book NZ festival A5 zine competition: (https://www.photobooknz.com/zine-competition ). The book festival has now been moved to August due to the change on COVID restrictions but the Zine still needs to be designed, printed (just one) and handed in for consideration by the 14th February.

Over the last few weeks I have developed six very different designs for the zine. My original mind set was very much based around the images from the draft book that was submitted for Body of Work, however following a discussion with Rohan Hutchinson I realised that may be the images don’t have to include the portraits of the women to actually be about the women.
The first six designs can be seen here:
All six were sent to fellow students from the three groups I regularly interact with: Rest of the World Group, Documentary/Level 3 and the Level 3 Support group. The feed back was limited due to the timing as a lot of them were trying to submit work for assessment. A copy of their responses can be found here.
I also sent the copies to Rohan Hutchinson who had offered to review by drafts once they were produced at the portfolio review here. He comments on the zines can be found here.
Following the feedback I decided to progress with version 4 as I thought that it did provide the better narrative, the images weren’t as literal, yet still showed the women, the environment and their strength.
Version 4a can be seen here: Inside the Shell A5 Zine v0.4a
I revisited the font and decided on one that had a more ‘geographical’ feel and designed by a New Zealand company (KILM: https://klim.co.nz/). I was allowed to download test versions for free. If I’m successful in the competition I will need to purchase a licence to use. This font will also be considered for the book but at this stage I will try and save money.
Final version 4b can be seen here: Inside the Shell A5 Zine v0.4b
This was initially printed on cheap paper to check the layout and then on the final paper type for handing in. I have produced a simple video to show the final result:
